Coming to therapy for the first time can be intimidating and emotional, and many people feel anxious even stepping into the waiting room. With that in mind, I strive to make people feel comfortable quickly, and part of that is helping folks know what to expect.

Before our first appointment, I’ll send you an invitation to my secure client portal along with a number of important documents to review and complete.

In our first appointment I’ll go over my approach to therapy, and answer any initial questions you may have. Then we’ll review some (admittedly boring) paperwork: my policies including fees, confidentiality, electronic communication, urgent mental health needs, and cancellation. After that we’ll review why you’re coming into therapy, your mental health history, family background, and who and what you turn to for comfort in times of stress. If you’re coming in for consultation around gender affirming surgery, we may also begin to discuss your hopes and any concerns around the process. Then we’ll check in about how things felt, and what makes sense moving forward. Our first few appointments are a time for you to see how I approach therapy, and whether I’m a good fit for you, and for me to carefully consider if my skills and expertise will help get you where you want to go. If I’m ultimately not the right person for you, for whatever reason, I’ll try to help you find someone who is a better fit.
